… New York Islanders forward Rob Schremp will be out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Schremp tore the MCL in his right knee in a game Tuesday night against the Philadelphia Flyers. The 23-year-old has 25 points in 44 games this season with the Islanders.

… The Atlanta Thrashers have called up defenseman Chris Chelios from Chicago of the American Hockey League. The 48-year-0ld signed with Atlanta earlier in March, but has continued to play in the AHL. Chelios is a three-time Norris Trophy winner for the league’s best defenseman, an eleven-time All-Star, and has been won three Stanley Cups during his career.

… According to the Boston Globe, Boston Bruins center Marc Savard could be out for the season after suffering a concussion last week when he was leveled by Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke. Savard has 33 points in 41 games with Boston this season. The league also announced Wednesday that it would not suspend Cooke because the hit was not considered illegal.

Washington Signs Kugryshev

The Washington Capitals have signed forward prospect Dmitry Kugryshev to a three-year, entry-level contract. The 20-year-old currently plays for the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He has 83 points in 64 games with the Remparts this season.

Kugryshev was originally a second round pick by the Capitals in the 2008 draft.

Kings Sign Schenn To Entry-Level Deal

The Los Angeles Kings have signed forward prospect Brayden Schenn to a three-year entry level contract. Schenn, 18, was the No. 5 pick in the 2009 draft by the Kings. He skated in one game with Los Angeles in November after signing a one-game amateur contract.

Schenn has 85 points, including 56 assists, in 54 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League this season. The young forward is in the top-10 in both goals scored and points in the WHL this season.

Brayden is the younger brother of Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Luke Schenn.

General Managers To Discuss Headshots

The 30 National Hockey League general managers will meet this week at the annual GM meetings. The meetings will begin Monday and end on Wednesday. One of the hottest topics is expected to be the issue of headshots in hockey and potential rule changes that could go into effect as soon as next season.

If the GMs decide to recommend a rule change it would then go to the league’s board of governors and competition committee for approval.

For the second straight year the meetings are being held after the NHL Trade Deadline so the focus can be on league issues instead of potential transactions.

Boogaard Suspended For Hit

The NHL has suspended Minnesota Wild forward Derek Boogaard for two games after a knee-to-knee hit on Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Jones on Friday night. Jones was recently acquired via waivers from the Nashville Predators.

The 27-year-old Boogaard has four points and 90 penalty minutes in 46 games this season with the Wild.

Sabres Send MacArthur To Thrashers

The Buffalo Sabres traded winger Clarke MacArthur on Wednesday to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for a third round pick and a fourth round pick in 2010. MacArthur, 24, has 13 goals and 26 points in 60 games with the Sabres this season.

MacArthur was originally a third round pick by Buffalo in the 2003 draft.

Ward To Ducks For Pogge, Draft Pick

The Anahehim Ducks continued re-shaping their defense on Wednesday acquiring defenseman Aaron Ward from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender Justin Pogge and a fourth round pick.

Ward, 37, has 11 points in 60 games for the Hurricanes this season. The veteran defenseman is a three-time Stanley Cup winner, including most recently with Carolina in 2006. Ward will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Pogge, 23, was traded for the second time this season; he was also traded in October going from Toronto to Anaheim. Pogge was originally a fourth round pick by the Maple Leafs in 2004.

Columbus Sends Picard To Phoenix

The Columbus Blue Jackets sent former first round pick Alexandre Picard to the Phoenix Coyotes yesterday in exchange for forward Chad Kolarik. The former No. 8 pick of the 2004 draft is scoreless in nine games with the Blue Jackets this season.

The 24-year-old Picard does have 35 points in 42 games with Syracuse of the American Hockey League this season. The 24-year-old Kolarik has 35 points in 59 games with San Antonio of the AHL.

Kolarik was originally a seventh round pick by the Coyotes in the 2004 draft.

Carolina Sends Yelle Back To Colorado

The busy Carolina Hurricanes have traded forwards Stephane Yelle and Harrison Reed to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward prospect Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll and a sixth round pick. Yelle returns to Colorado after spending seven seasons with the Avalanche. He helped the Avalanche win a Stanley Cup in 1996 and again in 2001.

Yelle, 35, has seven points and a minus-6 rating in 59 games this season. The 22-year-old Reed has six points in 49 games with Albany of the American Hockey League.

McNicoll, 21, has 13 points in 45 games with Lake Erie of the AHL this season.

Trade Deadline Quick Hits, Part 2: Penguins, Leafs, Blue Jackets, Panthers, Canucks

… The Pittsburgh Penguins and Toronto Maple Leafs hooked up on a trade for the second time in 24 hours with the Penguins sending defenseman Chris Peluso to the Leafs in exchange for a sixth round pick in the 2010 draft. The 23-year-old is currently playing at Bemidji State. He was originally a seventh round pick in the 2004 draft by Pittsburgh.

… The Columbus Blue Jackets have dealt defenseman Mathieu Roy to the Florida Panthers in exchange for forward prospect Matt Rust. Roy, 26, has 10 points in 31 games this season with Columbus. He was originally a seventh round pick by the Edmonton Oilers in 2003. The 20-year-old Rust was a fourth round pick in the 2007 draft.

… The Vancouver Canucks have acquired defenseman Andrew Alberts from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a third round pick in the 2010 draft. The 28-year-old Alberts has 10 points, a plus-6 rating, 72 penalty minutes, and 176 hits in 61 games this season with Carolina. Alberts was originally a sixth round pick by the Boston Bruins in the 2001 draft.

… The Canucks also made a deal with the St. Louis Blues acquiring forward Yan Stastny in exchange for forward prospect Pierre-Cedric Labrie. Stastny, 27, has one point in four games this season. Labrie, 23, has six points in 45 games with Manitoba of the AHL.
